Clinical engineering employs a total of 30 individuals. It offers a medical device management service to UHP, two neighboring PCTs, GP surgeries, and other healthcare facilities on 300 sites within a 450-square-mile area. Clinical Engineering oversees a database of 40,000 medical devices with a combined value exceeding £100 million.

The service offers comprehensive administration of medical devices, including pre-purchase assessment, safety and maintenance concerns, end-of-life disposal, and project and development work. A medical equipment library service is also available at Derriford Hospital.

Under the supervision of the team leader,  conduct scheduled preventative and corrective maintenance, calibration, safety, and acceptance testing on a variety of medical and clinical equipment as necessary. Acquires technical competencies in a variety of medical devices, as defined by the technical competency framework and departmental requirements, through in-house and manufacturer training. Creating a portfolio of knowledge, evidenced competence, and experience that is consistent with a nationally recognized standard.

After a successful evaluation of a completed Clinical Engineering portfolio that provides supporting evidence and demonstrates the required experience and knowledge, or upon completion of the PTP degree course (apprenticeship levy funded) in Clinical Engineering, this position is promoted to Clinical Engineer (Band 5).

To fulfill the position, a valid driver’s license is necessary.
