Funding Package:

Eligibility Criteria:

The fellowship is open to qualified scholars, including faculty emeriti, working in the field of classical studies.

  • Applicants must possess faculty status at a college or university at the time of application and throughout the fellowship period in order to qualify for salary replacement. They must not have received a completely funded sabbatical or research fellowship in the three years preceding the award year.
  • For project-based funding (e.g., archaeological excavations, travel, conferences), applicants must provide a comprehensive project budget, specify additional funding sources, and, if the project is part of a larger project, include a recommendation letter from the project director.
  • Applicants are prohibited from receiving more than three fellowships in a five-year period or three consecutive fellowships.

Application Timeline:

The LCLF application for the 2026–27 academic year opens on August 11, 2025 and closes on November 14, 2025. Applicants will be notified of the judges’ decisions in March 2026.

  1. Who is eligible to receive an LCLF Fellowship?

    Applicants must have faculty or faculty emeritus status at an institute of higher education at the time of application and during the entire time covered by the fellowship. Both U.S. citizens and non-U.S. citizens are eligible.

  2. Can I apply for LCLF funds to help cover my benefits?

    No. The LCLF does not cover indirect costs such as insurance, retirement contributions, taxes, etc.

  3. I have a tenure-track job, but my institution does not offer pre-tenure leave. Can I apply for sabbatical enhancement for one semester while taking an unpaid semester from my institution?

    Yes, but note the restrictions on funding usage.
