The Mary Gates Research Scholarship is now accepting applications for Fall 2025. This scholarship supports University of Washington undergraduate students involved in research across all disciplines. What Is the Mary Gates Research Scholarship?
The Mary Gates Research Scholarship is intended to provide financial assistance to University of Washington undergraduate students who are actively engaged in research under the supervision of a faculty member. It alleviates financial stress, thereby enabling students to concentrate more on their endeavors. This assistance enables students to devote additional time to the study of a subject of their choosing, including the humanities, arts, social sciences, and beyond.
What Does the Scholarship Offer?
- AWard Amount: $5,000
- Disbursement: Two $2,500 installments in equal amounts
- Award Period Options: Students are permitted to select two quarters (Autumn, Winter, Spring, or Summer) in which to receive the award. Seniors who are graduating in a single quarter may request a single payment of $2,500.
- Scholarships: This application cycle will award over 100 research scholarships and 50+ leadership scholarships.
Who Can Apply?
- During the award period, the applicant must be a full-time undergraduate student pursuing a bachelor’s degree at the UW Seattle, Bothell, or Tacoma campuses.
- Even if not employed full-time during the application quarter in Autumn 2025, it is possible to submit an application.
- By the commencement of the award period, there must be an active research endeavor with faculty (not necessarily at the time of application).
- Students who are registered for at least one credit during the summer are still eligible to receive their award for that term.
- Students are permitted to submit multiple applications for the Mary Gates scholarship; however, they are limited to receiving one (01) per quarter.
- Applicants who have previously been awarded the Research Scholarship are eligible to submit an application; however, additional evaluation criteria will be implemented. A student is eligible to receive a maximum of two (2) Research Scholarships and a total of three Mary Gates Scholarships.

Additional Expectations:
Awardees are required to:
- Maintain a high level of engagement with their faculty mentor and research during the award period.
- Be a full-time student or enroll in one credit during the summer.
- Completion of a brief survey is required for each award quarter.
- Present their research at the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium in May.
